John Nielsen (born 7 February 1956, in Varde) became popular in his native Denmark in the 1990s through his successes at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Even before Tom Kristensen, he was the first Dane to win the endurance classic. Before switching to sports cars, he was one of the best young drivers of his generation in single-seater racing. He won the German Formula 3 Championship in 1982 and the 1984 Formula 3 race in Macau, an event that many drivers used as a stepping stone to Formula 1 (Ayrton Senna had won there the year before). Nevertheless, Nielsen never made it into a Formula 1 cockpit. In 1985 and 1986, Nielsen drove for the Ralt factory team in the Formula 3000 Championship. He achieved only one victory there: winning the 1985 Curaçao Grand Prix in Willemstad, which did not count towards the championship. Nielsen has been among the top drivers in sports cars for three decades. He competed at Le Mans eighteen times until 2008. In 1990, he crowned his career with a victory, driving the Jaguar XJR-12 alongside Martin Brundle and Price Cobb.
