Sesame Street is one of the most successful television series for preschool children. The half-hour episodes consist of six to ten shorter, mostly thematically independent segments that interrupt a coherent overarching storyline. In addition to sketch-like or educational puppet dialogues (“A circle is round,” “Now I’m here, now I’m there”), cartoons, and children’s songs, there are often live-action segments depicting simple everyday situations or the production of a product. The television series is produced by Sesame Workshop, which is located at 1 Lincoln Plaza on the Upper West Side. An adjacent street, West 63rd Street, is also known as “Sesame Street” in this area. The first broadcast took place on January 8, 1973. What was completely new was that a children’s program aired several times a week and twice a day. Sesame Street was broadcast from Monday to Thursday at approximately 9:30 a.m. and repeated in the evening at 6:00 or 6:30 p.m. We celebrate this great TV show with a German stamp made in their honour …
