On 17 February 1972, the world car production record was broken by the Volkswagen Beetle, with a total of 15,007,034 units produced worldwide, thereby surpassing the production figure that had been held by the American Ford Model T for nearly fifty years. Volkswagen hence donated the car to the Smithsonian Institution for permanent exhibition in its industrial history section.
