Car Friday is a portmanteau of the religious holiday Good Friday and the English word “car.” The term refers to a “car day” as a gathering for car enthusiasts, tuners, and also car posers. Well-known meeting points include Pagenstecherstraße in Osnabrück, Vahrenwalder Straße in Hanover-Vahrenwald, Detmolder Straße in Paderborn, the Nordschleife at the Nürburgring, and the ICE city of Limburg. The event was tolerated there from 2013 until 2015, when it was canceled by the city and police in cooperation with the organizer. Because these gatherings often involve car posing and even illegal street races, the police increase their presence, conduct extensive traffic, vehicle, and speed checks, and issue dispersal orders and, in some cases, fines of up to €10,000 for violations.
