Since yesterday a massive forest fire has been burning near Hürtgenwald-Gey. Last Tuesday (11th August 2026) I took photos in the Hürtgenwald forest near a place they call the Brandenburg Gate (like the one in Berlin). The forests in this part of the Eifel are very rural and beautiful. I have created this post with five of my photos added to show you how fragile and how fast such beauty can be destroyed. What caused this disastrous forest fire is currently unknown, but courageous firemen and pilots are trying to protect the village of Gey. Their work is very hard as the area is riddled with WW II ammunition and personnel mines from a battle of the Nazis against courageous US soldiers that are still in the ground. The fire is causing these to detonate every 30min. An acute danger to the brave firemen trying to protect the are. Please look at my photos to witness the beauty of this forest. Currently I cannot say if the fire will reach this part of the forest, so my photos may be the last of their kind…
